St. Josaphat Council has the distinction of being the very first Ukrainian Catholic Council in the United States. We were chartered on the Feast Day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, March 25, 1980, with 33 members. Our patron is the great Ukrainian martyr and apostle of Church unity between East and West — St. Josaphat. Since its inception, our Council has provided various types of support to the Shrine. Our Knights are actively engaged in parish life, whether that takes the form of helping in the parish kitchen, singing in the choir, or ushering for Shrine functions. Some of the annual events the council hosts include the St. Josaphat Communion Breakfast, Halloween Family Decorating Contest, the Phillip’s Fast Pregnancy Center Donation Drive, and the parish Easter Egg hunt. We also provide contributions to charitable causes at home and in Ukraine. Of historic note, for the 1988 Millennium of Ukrainian Christianity, the Knights of our Council were instrumental in promoting Order-wide devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title as the Mother of God of Pochaiv. Our members have served in higher levels of leadership in the Knights, too. Past State Deputy of the District of Columbia Larry Sosnowich is a member of St. Josphat Council. Business meetings are held as announced from 10:15-11:15, which is between the regularly scheduled Divine Liturgies. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
